Picture this.
McDonald's 2018.
Frozen meat is being retired and fresh meat is being rolled out in a place where their beloved french fries are nasty because of a change in frying media.
McDonald's has spent a not so small chunk of change promoting their shift from frozen to fresh meat so I figured I needed to see how much of this is hype and how much of this is burger goodness.
Entering the McDonald's yesterday, I noticed the rather lengthy drive thru line. I chose the inside route because I'm not going to waste my precious $3 per gallon gasoline waiting for my meal. Thus I went inside to be greeted with a line of four people inside with one register open.
Remember, this is McDonald's circa 2018.
If you aren't in the drive thru lane, you will be a second class citizen entering the building.
And did I get to experience the wonders of placing an order for takeout.
The cashier was not named LaQuesha. Let's call her Shyrl. She was an obvious lesbian. She was nearly more man than I am. I'll give Shyrl credit. She'd take an order and then go to prepare food in the back. Thankfully she wore gloves during the interchange.
I did notice there was a propensity of Quarter Pounders being ordered - at $4.19, this is not a cheap option and is three times a value menu item.
I waited and waited and waited.
Shryl would come out from the prep area to fondle the bag that had had multiple sandwiches ordered and placed in the bag over the past three to four minutes. I can't help but think that had there been any fresh Quarter pounders in that bag, the freshness was gone and the difference in hype between hockey pucks being placed on the grill from the freezer and a non-frozen option would disappear.
And I waited.
Finally my number was called by Shyrl and I received my Quarter pounder and french fries. I headed home and unloaded my car from shopping and then proceeded to feast upon a fresh, not frozen burger.
I kept waiting for there to be a difference. Was it juicier as McDonald's has stated. Nope. It was less dense than the frozen one, but it was somehow less beefy in taste. It was thinner and had better bun coverage than the frozen version, but overall there was nothing that would have identified this as a fresh burger if I hadn't already known it to be so.
Coupled with the outrageous wait time from placing order to receiving it, I can't recommend Mickey's latest attempt at being special. You would be better off with Wendy's.
