And now a third television program that I'll recommend...
"Vikings" from the History Channel.
As I am a cable cord-cutter, I have missed out on some, but not much, when it comes to programming. But thanks to having SlingTv, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, I am now catching up on what is out there and on my own schedule. And all of these services combined are less expensive than the basic cable costs; add to it that I get over the air HDTV local channels (in addition to 20 others of varying content quality), I am now getting most of what I lost at less than half the cost. So I give up the first run portion of some of this. Big whoop. I am enjoying my marathon sessions of watching a series from start to finish and it bloody makes better sense.
And so Hulu has "Vikings" - I had managed to see an episode before somewhere along the line over the past couple years and was intrigued - but the episode didn't make much sense since it was in the middle of the series. I digested Seasons One and Two and was hooked.
Alas, I'm a hoe. I love the beefcake - though having this on the History Channel does limit how much of the beefcake you are able to see - I'm wanting prime rib - and I'm getting Chuck roasts - but what you do see is satisfying enough though is only an appetitizer on the way to perving and celebrating the God Oden.
Part of my intrigue here is that my aunt had done extensive genealogy on my family in the 1970's and was spot on as she traced our roots back - arriving here in North America in the 1680's as part of a hurricane that predates Sandy that hit the northeastern portion of what became the United States. Three ships arrived here. One ship wrecked on the coast of Maine, one made it to Massachusetts, and the other went to New Foundland in Canada.
As my family is primarily English in origins that we can trace back to the 1150's, there was an interesting note that my Aunt left about Norway. And with the knowledge that the Vikings had invaded what is now England in the late 700's, I had in the back of my mind watching "Vikings" if this is how my family came to be - that Vikings my be in my blood.
So I watched these first two seasons (I'm now into the third season preparing myself for the arrival of the fourth season in 2016) with more than just a curiosity about my ancestors. I realize that this show is so skewed to make it more desirable to watch - I seriously doubt that men looked this good then, but there is a bit of animal magnetism about this show - the raw nasty sex - the manhood on display where wimps aren't the featured eye-candy - and the only apparent shaving of the body is on the heads - alas, old growth man fur.
If you get a chance, watch the first three seasons - Hulu now has them - or maybe your cable provider has them on demand where you can catch up. Be warned - this is a very violent series and it can be filled with blood spattered faces. There is much treachery and back stabbing and conquest. It is a delight even if it is reality stretched to the limit in some spots.
